The weather
May is mild and warm rather than hot. Average temperature is about 19°C, with daytime highs around 23°C and nights around 14°C on one forecast site.[1] Another puts highs around 25°C and evenings near 17°C.[2] Sources differ a little, so expect warm days and cooler evenings and bring a layer.
Rain is rare. One source lists about 5 rainy days totalling roughly 22 mm and says clear skies are the norm.[1] Late May has about 10 hours of sunshine a day on another site.[3]
The sea
The sea is only starting to warm up. Estimates for May are about 18°C to 20°C.[2][3] That is fine for a quick dip or a boat day, but cooler than July and August, which reach 27°C.[4]
Crowds and atmosphere
May is described as just before the summer rush, with a more relaxed feel than high season.[1] Boat party schedules typically start in late May and peak in July and August.[5] Some regular club nights only start in June, so check each venue before you plan around it.[6] That is why late May suits opening parties: the season is starting, and the heat is less intense.
What to pack
- Swimwear, sun cream and sunglasses, as the sun is strong even when it is not hot.
- A light jacket or hoodie for evenings and boat trips.
- Comfortable shoes you can walk home in.
- Your passport. Check entry rules before you travel, as in the student guide.
